World Markets See-Saw As Dollar Hits Record Low And Oil Prices Soar
News on Thursday showed that foreclosures, or repossessions, had hit a record high in the fourth quarter of last year while house prices look to be in freefall. Analysts said the latest numbers were as good as confirmation that the U.S. economy was already in recession as a result of the housing market collapse and sub-prime mortgage crisis, which has already claimed victims across the globe, including Northern Rock. 'The debate should no longer be about whether there is or is not a recession, only about how deep it will be. Private employment has now fallen for three months in a row,' said Nigel Gault, economist at Global Insight. 'The Fed has to be more aggressive,' said Richard DeKaser, chief economist for National City Corporation in Cleveland, Ohio. U.S.

Your franchise could be at risk
Have you looked at radio-station Web sites lately? Some of them, even in small towns, do a good job of mimicking newspaper Web sites, including newspaper-like photographs of local events as well as daily updates of news, sports and obituaries. The ads look just like the ads on newspaper Web sites, which means those ad dollars are not going to the newspaper.I hate to admit that we were slow in getting our Web site up after my wife and I bought our last newspaper. There was so much to do, a Web site kept getting pushed down our "to-do" list. The wakeup call came when our city government began talking about giving away free business links on the city Web site. That would have made it more difficult for us to sell ads on our Web site. We announced plans for our site in a hurry, and the city, fortunately, dropped its proposal. The fact is that anyone can start a Web site these days for a few hundred bucks, and those newspapers procrastinating about the Internet need to get their own sites up before someone else does, be it a radio station, a chamber of commerce, a tourism group, a high-school journalism class, the computer whiz down the street or some guy you've ticked off with a news story.Your newspaper owns the franchise for news and advertising in your community and probably has done so for 100-150 years.

Souped-Up Contact Lenses Promise On-Demand Bionic Eyesight
Potential uses include virtual displays for pilots, video-game projections and telescopic vision for soldiers. A working prototype of a lens-embedded antenna that draws power for the device from radio frequencies has also been created. The next steps are to build a version that can display several pixels—and then to test it on a person. The UW team uses a technique called self-assembly to manufacture the eyewear. Researchers dust a specially designed contact lens with microscale components that automatically bond to predetermined receptor sites. The shape of each component dictates where it attaches. “There's a lot of room to expand," Babak Parviz, an assistant professor of electrical engineering at UW, says of the technology. “You can let your imagination run wild." .
Jotspot Returns As Google Sites: Wiki-Style Collaboration
Ever since Google bought the wiki-based online application startup Jotspot in late 2006, people have been wondering if it had disappeared forever inside the bowels of the search giant. Tonight, Google's launching Google Sites, using Jotspot's technology to create a free group collaboration service that will be part of its online software suite Google Apps. Google characterizes Sites, which had been hinted at in late 2007, as the biggest Apps launch since Apps Premier Edition a year ago, and it may be right. The new service lets people in an organization instantly create a wiki-style group workspace, where they can post text, videos, calendars, and various attachments for their group or department to view and edit. Scott Johnston, Google's senior product manager on Sites, has more in a blog post and video.
