| Why change the foreign investment rules now?
You may recall a couple of years ago Dubai were looking to buy some ports in the USA, and the US Senate rushed through some national security rules preventing 'foreign interests' from purchasing sensitive assets like ports. Given how much of New Zealand has been sold off into foreign hands, with little profit to New Zealanders, maybe its not a bad thing to ensure some assets remain in NZ hands. NZ's main airport is surely as valuable as NZ's main airline, and Air NZ was kept out of foreign control for years (under National & Labour governments) via the A & B shares before the government took a majority stake. .
Bernanke Dismisses 'Stagflation'
The economy is not close to a 1970s-style mix of stagnant growth and high inflation, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said yesterday, but he painted a generally dour outlook and cautioned that the downturn is likely to cause some small banks to go under. .

Norris survivor suggests classes
Further, in case you missed it all over the news, mental health bills are flying through our legislation and are supported by both sides. But beyond that, you're calling for more restrictions on responsible people. Permit holders are almost 6 times less likely to commit violent crime than those without, and firearms are used 2-3 times more often for self-defense than for crime. I'm so sick of people saying a gun is too easy to get. If you've ever bought a gun, you would know that you can't even get the background check in 45 minutes, so add in shopping time, checkout, picking out holsters, ammunition, etc etc etc and we're talking hours if not days/weeks/months. Abu Dhabi primed to take lead role at EIBTM exhibition in Spain
The emirate will use the three-day trade show to display the results of initiatives taken to transform its conferences and incentives sector. H.E. Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, the ADTA's chairman, said on the eve of the exhibition, that the emirate now had all the components in place to become a leader in the regional incentives and conferences tourism industry. He highlighted the benefits of Abu Dhabi's geographical position, infrastructure, and its outstanding facilities and services and said work was continuing to boost the sector's development by adding further tourism projects and facilities. Sheikh Sultan said an important contributor to efforts to boost the sector had been Abu Dhabi's hosting of the Gulf Incentives, Business Travel and Meetings (GIBTM) in March. This showcased the emirate's superb facilities and infrastructure and confirmed its readiness and ability to host even the biggest trade events.
Apple Wants To Make DRM Extortion Explicit
This is stupid no matter how you slice it. (reply to this comment) (link to this comment) Re: Playing Devil's Advocate by Alan on Dec 5th, 2007 @ 7:18am I think this is the pertinent point - Apple must provide a legal way for customers to load content onto its devices. One way is by buying the movie via ITMS. The ITMS selection is tiny though, so they are looking for other sales channels. The problem here is the law that makes it illegal to transfer DVDs to other media, not the fact that Apple is trying to sell movies for its devices. (reply to this comment) (link to this comment) Here Here... by Rip Away on Dec 5th, 2007 @ 7:20am I agree with #3, isn't jaywalking illegal also, MacTheRipper is the most comprehensive ripping utility on the planet for non-HD, isn't it ironic it's on the Mac platform.
Happy Friday: News About Economy Just Gets Worse
Friday's reports were just the latest in a string of worrisome news about the growing threat of recession and inflation. "Over the last three to four weeks, there have been a string of economic releases that were dramatically weaker than expected," said John Canavan, a market analyst at Stone and McCarthy Associates. "The implications are quite negative for the economy." The only bright spot: futures traders are now speculating that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates by three-quarters of a point at its March 18 meeting instead of the half point that was expected previously. .
