True to his 'roots,' true to his 'grooves'

His parents played gospel music in their church and his uncle headed a local R&B band, the Blue Notes. He started playing saxophone at 8, and soon formed the Junior Blue Notes with his younger brother Melvin on drums and older bro Kellis on trombone. By the time he was in the sixth grade, the band was performing between sets at the Blue Note's gigs.

By the time he graduated from college with a degree in music, he had perfected his hard-driving sound, a gritty, insistent, rhythmic incantation that he perfected with Melvin.

"His second year, I talked him into doing the freshman talent show, just drums and saxophone, no guitar or piano," Parker recalled. "We used to fool around like that at home, this Africa kind of sound, where I'd kind of scat to change the tempo. We had that connection.

Coming Up on 'FOX News Sunday': Four Influential Governors

We'll talk politics and policy with four influential governors and also look into the list of possible vice presidential choices. We sit down with Tim Pawlenty, R-Minn.; Mark Sanford, R-S.C.; Tim Kaine, D-Va., and Jon Corzine, D-N.J., only on "FOX News Sunday."

Then, we'll discuss this week's New York Times story that used anonymous sources to go after Senator McCain. How solid was their story and did it do McCain more good than harm? Joining us will be our Power Panel: Brit Hume, Washington managing editor of FOX News; Mara Liasson of National Public Radio; Bill Kristol of The Weekly Standard, and Juan Williams of National Public Radio.

Alberta is the promised land, or so we have been told-

Don't sit there waiting for another empty promis from Buzz and Dalton about re-opening some doomed factory for a few more years. Go get a new job in a new industry. You are responsible for you. Posted 29/01/08 at 1:25 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .

Two-second machine delay has no effect on video play

I've received some good reader questions this month, starting with one about an aspect of slot-machine play that's often misinterpreted as a "signal."

While playing video poker, every now and then the machine will "stall" before dealing the next hand. Any idea what is really going on?

Bruce C.

It's something that occurs not only with video poker but spinning-reel and video slots, as well. According to the engineers at International Game Technology (IGT), the periodic two-second delay occurs when the machine's internal electronic meters are being updated. The meters have no connection with the machine's random number generator and therefore have no bearing on the course of play.

Four Winds in New Buffalo, Mich., features computer-generated random winners.

New Hampshire campaign focuses on independents

We have some very fine presidential candidates who would make good presidents. But none of the top Presidential candidates directly support HR 676, the only true Universal Health Care plan. So I am supporting Hillary Clinton. She is the only top candidate that has ever actually fought for universal health care before.

I have enormous admiration, and respect for Hillary Clinton. She fought a pitched battle against overwhelming odds back in 1993. To prevent this disastrous health care crisis that is now devastating the American people, and America. She fought so hard for the American people that she risk almost completely destroying her husbands presidency. I haven't forgotten her heroic effort. If any Presidential hopeful for universal health care deserves my support, it's her.

Merger will net Reuters chief £22.5m windfall

January and February were record months for Reuters sales, despite belt-tightening at banks and financial service providers, which make up the majority of its clients. The group is predicting revenue growth of 9pc in the first quarter of 2008.

about this blog

Both seedlings are big enough that I ought to have laid eyes on them before...but it seems like they appeared from nowhere! In the right foreground of this next pic is a yellow sulfur cosmos seedling I planted just this past week. I'm nearly certain there wasn't another plant crowding so close beside it when I did ...which means the upper seedling has popped up pretty quickly since then while I was busy looking elsewhere...like magic.Posted by PicasaA third yellow and brown iris came into bloom today. They are beautiful, and I'm enjoying having them here. Ungrateful bastard that I am, however, I am hoping there'll be some other colors in the vast array of irises which have yet to bloom. Posted by PicasaI think this one is beautiful, especially in the close up (don't get me wrong) but because of the dark falls, it tends to look much smaller at a distance.

If You Tag It, It Will Be Used: Sustainability Reporting in XBRL

Weeks after the latest SEC roundtable on interactive data, the Global Reporting Initiative releases a draft taxonomy of XBRL tags mapped to G3 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines.

SocialFunds.com -- The dawning of the electronic age has radically transformed the way humans interact with information. Digital data has shifted use from "hard" print copies to electronic files available on the World Wide Web, email and other formats. More profoundly, e-data transcends the linearity of print by directly connecting interrelated information--for example through a keyword search within a document or via a search engine on the Web, or by hyperlinks that directly connect related items within a document or across the Web.

Charlie Hoffman's 1998 invention of eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) applied all these benefits to corporate reporting.

Wolf Pack can't win WAC without help Closing sweep is first task for ...

UNR's quest to win its fifth straight Western Athletic Conference regular-season title is alive. But the Wolf Pack is going to need plenty of help.

UNR, 17-10 overall, is third in the WAC at 9-4, a game behind first-place Boise State and a half-game behind second-place New Mexico State.

The Wolf Pack's final push begins Thursday when its hosts New Mexico State. Saturday is the final regular-season home game, against last-place Louisiana Tech, and the regular season closes March 8 at Fresno State.

To win the conference, UNR probably needs to sweep its final three games and hope Boise State loses two of its last three. The Broncos (10-3) are at San Jose State and Hawaii this week, and no WAC team has swept that trip this season. Boise State ends the season at home against Utah State.
