The Joy of Commuting and Other Stuff
Why do weather Web sites list the current temperature and then right next to it say "feels like" another temp? And the numbers are usually very close. Do they do this so they can cover their butts if they are way off? Here's what AccuWeather has on its Web site for the temp in NYC right now: 44°F RealFeel® 38°F Weather.com 44 Feels like 39 Does a meterologist stand outside with a thermometer, get a reading and then look to a colleague and say, "I don't know. It says 49, but I really think it feels like 47. What do you think?" If only this scale applied to other situations in life. "Your coffee is $1.75." "But it feels like it should cost $1.57." "The scale says I weigh 143." "But I really feel 129" In case you're wondering, Weather.com says it's currently 77 degrees in Los Angeles and feels like...77! Hmmm.
Science Tough Roads Loom Ahead for U.S. Pharmaceutical Giants
The reason biotech firms are popular purchases for pharmaceutical giants is that there is currently no U.S. regulatory pathway for generic biotech drugs, effectively allowing biotech drug inventors to sell a brand only product indefinitely until new legislation is mandated. Many pharmaceutical companies are cutting staff to maintain profits with companies like Eli Lilly & Co announcing it will cut 10% of its workforce and Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. announcing it will cut about 4300 jobs and close 27 manufacturing facilities. Some drug makers are also looking to outsource the manufacture of their medications overseas where the costs are much lower. Such costs saving measures are unlikely to mean lower drug prices for U.S. consumers where the brunt of the cost of development of a medication is made back by drug makers.
It's still a Big Easy feast
A tiny woman sitting next to us at the bar was well on her way to polishing off both halves along with a bottle of Beck's that was preceded by a cocktail or two. Let's face it, New Orleans is not for teetotalers or strict adherents of a carb-free diet. 'Bar-muda Triangle' After our Bywater hosts had polished off their share of the Domeliese's and Parasol's dividends, they suggested a crawl through some Bywater watering holes that are part of what's known as the "Bar-muda Triangle." I'd never been to either but was immediately struck by their down-home nature, which is a perfect antidote to too much enforced conviviality in the French Quarter. First up was Vaughn's Lounge. The name of the place is spelled out in nickels pressed into the worn stone stoop.
Open Thread
For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: the smartest woman in the world complains about sexism in the campaign (paragraph breaks removed): In an interview with ABC News' Cynthia McFadden to air on this evening's "Nightline," Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., says it's tougher for her to run as a woman than it is for her male opponent. Asked why she thinks so many women may be feeling sorry for her, Clinton said, "I think a lot of women project their own feelings and their lives onto me, and they see how hard this is. It's hard. It's hard being a woman out there. It is obviously challenging with some of the things that are said that are not even personal to me so much as they are about women."..."Every so often I just wish that it were a little more of an even playing field," she said, "but, you know, I play on whatever field is out there."...But apparently Clinton thinks -- based on this comment -- that the "playing field" is easier for a black man than a white woman.
