The vitamin D miracle: Is it for real?

Today, with vitamin D so much in the news, it's hard to believe that it took decades for the Garlands' hypothesis to gain traction in the mainstream medical community.

But the benefits of vitamin D are no longer restricted to cancer prevention: Studies have linked a shortage of the compound to such serious, chronic ailments as multiple sclerosis, diabetes, heart disease, influenza and schizophrenia.

Cedric Garland, now a professor of preventive medicine at the University of California, San Diego, is so convinced of this broad link that he says, "I think vitamin D is introducing a golden age in medicine."

And he's not alone. So compelling is the latest research that a number of credible medical researchers and public-health advocates, many of them in Canada, have started taking doses far above 200 to 600 international units - the daily intake recommended by Health Canada, depending on age with an upper limit of 2,000 IU.

Del Norte seeking reliable Internet

A study for rural broadband connectivity is making its way to Crescent City, which could quell service disruption problems.

Redwood Coast Connect is inviting the public to attend a meeting on making broadband more accessible to Del Norte from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Thursday in the Cultural Center. There will be a short presentation before the meeting opens for public comment.

Redwood Coast Connect is conducting a study to see where broadband services are needed and wanted in Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino and Trinity Counties. The project's purpose is to identify opportunities for broadband development in the rural counties.

California Emerging Technology Fund, with a consortium of regional funders, awarded Redwood Coast Connect $500,000 to determine supply and demand. Redwood Coast Connect will also be handing out paper surveys and doing random phone surveys this month.

Clinton campaign starts 5-point attack on Obama

Surely a man of any integrity would not participate in such a spectacle. Obama is either out-of-the-loop, shallower than we dare imagine, or far sinister than he lets on. Is this our concern? No. Our concern as voters, is our vote. With our vote lies our own responsibility towards this nation, and its citizens.

Getting entrepreneurial in 2008

For the past several years, I've run a consulting and market research practice called Enterprise Insight, where I've focused on CIOs and understanding their key business issues. I've spent lots of time meeting with CIOs, designing and moderating CIO thought leadership events and panels, and generally trying to get "inside the mind of the CIO." I help CIOs network with each other and share insights, and help the technology community understand what's driving CIOs' decisions. So if you need someone to fly to Vegas and tell your salespeople what CIOs really care about, give me a call.

My second venture is very different, but equally energizing. It's a new Web site on antiques and collecting, which have been a passion of mine for several years. The goal of the site, CollectorsWeekly.com, is to be a showcase for " the best of antiques and collecting," a place where you can browse great antiques and collectibles in hundreds of categories and learn about them.

Seniority an Issue for Delta, Northwest

Northwest Airlines Corp. pilots have integration issues to sort out. Not just the ones with their counterparts at Delta Air Lines Inc. that threaten to scuttle talks to combine the two carriers. The ones with Republic Airlines. From 1986.

An arbitrator is still sorting out seniority questions from that deal, illustrating just how much the point matters. Employees at the top of the list get first choice on vacations, the best routes and the bigger planes that they get paid more for flying.

The boards of Delta and Northwest had been expected to vote Wednesday on a combination projected to be worth $20 billion if a pilot deal was in place. It was not clear if the boards met, though a person familiar with the negotiations said a merger deal would not be announced Thursday as had been hoped.

Brilliant scientist or blasphemous rebel?

For many of us, the birthday of evolutionist Charles Darwin, author of "Origin of Species," comes and goes, and we never notice. But for those who appreciate the great contribution that Darwin made to science, his birthday often is celebrated with a series of events."There is an internationally coordinated celebration that is worldwide," says Dr. Robert Mucci, associate professor and program director of Indiana University Northwest's Anthropology Program.Indeed, Darwin Day has its own Web site (www.darwinday.org) dedicated to the celebrations of science and humanity that are held on or around Feb. 12, which is the day Darwin was born 199 years ago. Interestingly, another great man was born that day a continent away -- Abraham Lincoln."Specifically, it celebrates the discoveries and life of Charles Darwin -- the man who first described biological evolution via natural selection with scientific rigor," reads the site that lists more than 400 celebratory events."More generally, Darwin Day expresses gratitude for the enormous benefits that scientific knowledge, acquired through human curiosity and ingenuity, has contributed to the advancement of humanity."Darwin Day events circle the globe, and there is a series of them in Northwest Indiana starting this weekend at the First Unitarian Church in Hobart. On Saturday, Prof.

Debate over malpractice ‘crisis’ comes to the capital

Whenever Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, D,W,F-Manhattan, was mentioned the crowd booed and hissed. Reached at his office, Dan Weiller, Silvers press representative, gave a statement on the speakers behalf: We are examining ways to address doctors concerns, maintain the financial viability of the malpractice insurance system and ensure and improve patient safety. The Medical Society is arguing that following a 14 percent increase in insurance premiums in July 2007, most physicians in New York are now paying 55 to 80 percent more for their liability insurance in 2008 than they were in 2003, bringing the annual premiums for many specialists to amounts in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Adding to the problem they say is that physicians could face a 10 percent cut in their Medicare reimbursement on July 1 if Congress doesnt act to prevent it.
