Music Preview: Jon Anderson says Yes to the School of Rock

They are Paul Green School of Rock All-Stars, as seen in the documentary "Rock School." With guidance from the Philadelphia-based Green, an avid classic-rock fan, the kids became fans of Yes' style of progressive rock and invited Anderson to perform on the soundtrack for the film.

The next step was a tour, for which he happily obliged. The band is playing a set that includes about 10 Yes songs, including the challenging, nearly 20-minute-long suite "Close to the Edge" from 1972.

Community briefs

This year's recipient is Darcy Terry, owner of Nationwide Insurance on Denbigh Boulevard. Established on that road in 1976, the office recently moved to a new location on the street. There, Terry installed a digital sign reminiscent of the bank sign that graced the intersection of Denbigh and Warwick boulevards for decades.

Carol Lannie, RN, BSN, will give a presentation on "The Birds and Bees for Individuals with Special Needs." Specifically, this is for middle and high school students with disabilities and their parents at the Midtown Community Center, 570 McLawhorne Drive.

Father-daughter cancer story sold in living rooms

It was her first book, and Kelly Corrigan knew no matter how engaging her writing, how intriguing the topic or how established her publisher, a book tour was out of the question. Old-style, multicity book tours draw crowds only to celebrity authors, she was told, and even then they don't sell many books because most attendees already have a copy. What's left - word of mouth? Precisely, says Corrigan, a Radnor native and the author of The Middle Place (Voice/Hyperion Books). Corrigan and her father were diagnosed with cancer at the same time - an unusual circumstance that highlighted the overlapping roles of parents and children. Corrigan knew she needed to distinguish her memoir from others out there about surviving cancer. So she extended her options by asking friends and acquaintances across the country to host book parties in their homes.

Domestic Spying

Cenk Uygur: Why Do You Need Immunity If You Haven't Broken the Law? (1 comments) The Bush administration is desperately trying to get immunity for the telecom companies inserted into the next wiretapping bill. But let me ask a simple question - why would the telecom companies need immunity if they didn't break the law? I'm not trying to be clever here. I'm asking a literal question. Isn't this an obvious admission that the administration did ask the large telecommunication companies to break the law ?

Dave Lindorff: What are Progressives Waiting For? (8 comments) The Democrats have made it clear: They're not going to end the war, and they're not going to impeach. They're not even going to stop the spying on Americans. How much more abuse do progressives plan to stand for?

Dean Powers: On Wiretapping, Democrats Ask Bush: "Would You Like it Gift-Wrapped?" (6 comments) Rooting for the Democrats is like rooting for the Chicago Cubs...

Asus’ 8.9″ Eee draws crowds at CeBIT

Here in CeBIT 2008, crowds descended on Hannover Germany to see the latest technologies. Germany is certainly a lovely country but there's nothing lovable about the 5.60 Euro per gallon gas prices.

CeBIT is certainly one of the more unique conventions I've been to since everything is spread out over a square kilometer and it's like going to 10 mini conventions. While you get some outdoor air between the halls, don't expect any fresh air with all the smokers there. The temperature delta certainly makes proper attire a challenge because it's too warm inside and freezing outside.

Asus had a massive presence in building 26 which is one of the more popular spots at CeBIT and they managed to draw crowds wanting to get a closer look at the new and improved 8.9″ Asus Eee PC.

With Signals Mixed, Stocks Score Few Gains

Bulls, however, took comfort in stocks' ability to hold above their January lows, which suggests that much of the unfolding economic torpor may be reflected in share prices. Late Friday reports suggesting a pending bailout of bond insurer Ambac Financial (ticker: ABK) helped stocks recoup the day's losses quickly and dramatically.

Companies also paint a mixed picture. Brisk computer sales brightened Hewlett-Packard's (ticker: HPQ) outlook, but the increasingly dull Sharper Image (SHRP) filed for bankruptcy. Barron's warned readers against shares of the gadget merchant -- and its Ionic Breeze air purifiers -- nearly two years ago ("Gone with the Wind," May 2, 2005), when the stock fetched 13-14.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended the week up 33, or 0.3%, to 12381. The Standard & Poor's 500 edged up 3, or 0.2%, to 1353.

Carter ‘picks’ spots well

But Wisconsin free safety Shane Carter, who initially stopped short of Mathews, expecting a better pass, leaped backward and made a spectacular one-handed grab.

It was a play that usually isn't known to be part of a defensive player's repertoire. More like a wide receiver, Carter was able to keep the ball alive with his hand-eye coordination and hold on for the early forced turnover.

The pick set up the game's first touchdown and an early Wisconsin 7-0 lead, one the Badgers would never relinquish.

"I don't know how he caught that," UW cornerback Jack Ikegwuonu said of Carter's pick following the Michigan game. "Shane's a ballhawk, he's always around the ball, and I'm not surprised that he made that catch. He's got great hands."

Fitting, since that's the position the younger brother of former Minnesota Viking and future Hall of Fame receiver Chris Carter wanted to play.

DNC: More John McCain Double Talk in CPAC Speech

In fact, at CPAC, Campaign McCain took his do-anything-to-win presidential campaign to new lows, claiming to be a consistent conservative in a speech loaded with double talk on everything from pork spending, to immigration reform, to the Bush tax cuts. McCain bragged about his support for extending the President's reckless tax cuts, but failed to mention that he voted against them. He claimed to have stood by his immigration reform proposal even though he said just last week that he would vote against it if it returned to the Senate floor. And he pledged not to sign any spending bill with earmarks, despite pushing his own earmarks for Arizona while in Congress and relying on one of Washington's most successful pork lobbyists to fund his campaign.

"John McCain's politically motivated flip-flops and shameless pandering to the right wing of the Republican Party show why the American people simply cannot trust him to provide the change they are looking for," said Democratic National Committee spokesman Damien LaVera.

Air Nelson general manager John Hambleton said his company would be taking part in an Air New Zealand security review.
