Failing the Lohan Test

They probably tell the bill's opponents that they are faking when they say they're faking their opposition. At some point the search for authenticity in state-of-the-art politicians becomes fruitless. A fake "no" vote counts as much as a heartfelt "no" vote. ... 12:01 P.M.

Paranoid's Corner II: I'm now so obsessed with the Senate "p.o.s." immigration bill that I think all the news the Bush administration is making--from the President's unusual press conference to his statements on Iran and Iraq to the release of that Osama-Zawahiri message--isn't really designed to influence the public's views on Iran and Iraq or Al Qaeda. It isn't designed to directly influence the public on anything. It's designed to take up media space over Memorial Day so there's less room for angry opposition to the President's immigration bill! It's so obvious....

Winter Storm Pounds Miami Valley, Driving Dangerous!

Roads in the metro-Dayton area appear to be wet, but a lot of highways and interstates have been the scene of numerous crashes because of slick road conditions.

Travel remains very hazardous. There are many counties that have issued snow emergencies, which means that motorists should travel only if necessary.

2 p.m. Update:
Roads continue to be slick across the region. The best thing to do is to drive carefully if you have to go out on the roadways. News Center 7's Gabrielle Enright said that a lot of people are still packing the stores in Xenia getting some last minute groceries.

Storm Center 7 Chief Meteorologist Jamie Simpson said road crews are going to be hampered by the strong winds and is going to make clearing the roads tough. Simpson said the best thing to do is to stay home and wait the storm out for the next 24 hours.

Children's tours span from art exhibit to library checkout

Noontime at the Missoula Public Library won't mean a lunch break for our Youth Services librarians, not for the next three months anyway. The library is once again hosting tours for every fifth-grade class in Missoula as part of our annual partnership with the Missoula Art Museum. The students begin their journey at the museum, where this year they are being treated to an exhibit by David Shaner, one of Montana's great ceramic artists. They have a chance to create some hands-on artwork before walking the few blocks to the library for a selection of books related to ceramics and a tour of the library's collection."Our hope is that by targeting one grade over a period of many years every public school student in Missoula County will have been to the library at least once," says children's librarian Karen Gonzales.

Felton's job status is uncertain as Georgia's season comes to a close

Two freshmen, Jeremy Jacob and Chris Barnes, were lost to season-ending injuries. Another top reserve, Rashaad Singleton, quit the team after he lost a starting job to freshman Jeremy Price.

Meanwhile, guard Billy Humphrey is back in the lineup after arrests in separate incidents for underage possession of alcohol and having a small knife in his dorm room. Humphrey has also missed time with a knee injury.

Evans has not given any insight how he will factor in the injuries, suspensions and dismissals when he evaluates Felton, who is 71-78 in five years.

"As always I'll sit down with our head basketball coach at the end of the year," Evans said Thursday. "We do everything in totality and until such time there is nothing more to be said."

Saturday's game will be the final home game for seniors David Bliss, the starting center, and Sundiata Gaines, the team's leading scorer and top overall player.

It doesn't help that he sleeps with his dog, Sidi, and lets her ...

@36: Nope, he is descended from European peasant stock. You know, the one ethnicity on the frig'n planet who never managed to go anywhere without spreading either disease, pestilence, famine or war on the indigenous civilizations they interacted with. Even if said civilization was the sole reason they were able to survive in the new environment. So horrendous is their moral core, that they never even managed to break away from this pattern of behavior, even amongst other "white" groups, why do you think that is? You know, viruses display a similar behavior on all forms of life, either eukaryotic or prokaryotic. Very strange, very strange indeed, perhaps some sort of generalized mental illness that permeates the very essence of their genetic core, thus allowing us to see the manifestation we have today.

Can Steve Jobs convince jailbreakers to walk the straight and narrow?

Apple Industry

So, Apple has released an SDK for the iPhone and iPod touch. Pretty soon the web will be flooded with quality apps which will be a click (and in many cases, a few bucks) away. But is this enough to convince jailbreakers (both the developers who rely on it now and consumers who have chosen to jailbreak their iPhone) to walk the straight and narrow?

See, while an SDK and new apps for the iPhone has generated some good press for Apple today, I can't help but notice that developers have managed to accomplish an awful lot without Apple's help.

Taking the leap: Feb. 29 is becoming the big day for couples

Miller, 45, is still tweaking the fine print.

"Well, yes, we'll do a big celebration every four years, but in between those years, we'll do something small and special, either Feb. 28 or March 1," Miller says with a wink in her tone.

Tammy Degroot, a file clerk in the Macomb County Clerk's office, says the anniversary date question has even come up with the couples she's helped.

"I had a bride ask, 'When do we celebrate our anniversary?' and I told her that was up to her and her husband-to-be. I think that's the point. You get to choose," Degroot says.

Mary Green, who co-owns Victoria Wedding Chapel in Waterford Township, tells a similar tale.

"Four years ago, I had a bride get married on Leap Day and just before she walked down the aisle, she turned to me in a mild panic and said 'Wait a minute.

Pentagon Aide's Invitations Contradicted U.S. Policy

At the urging of a subordinate, Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon England scheduled at least two meetings with foreign emissaries in direct contradiction of U.S. policy at the time. The meetings date back to 2005. They involved a Lebanese ambassador considered a proxy for the Syrian government and a leading member of Syria's Muslim Brotherhood.

U.S. policy at the time was not to engage in talks with either man, because they represent groups with whom the United States was not to communicate. The meetings were organized by England's special assistant for international affairs, Hesham Islam.

An invitation to Muslim Brotherhood official Husam al-Dairi was canceled in late 2005 after a senior State Department official heard about it and insisted it not take place.

Friday wild card

I was planning to peek at the blog before I hit the sack. And spent 20 minute skimming the comments section. Hilarious! I can see why that's so dang addictive. Partisans were toe to toe fighting out which side I love most. I felt like a proud papa watching his talented siblings go after one another. 'Tis extremely hard not to post or respond to comments. But it appears that Blogmeister Ken Paulman has things very well in hand. So, 'tis time to catch some Zzzzz's and prepare for my final -- I hope! -- day of painting. While I paint and sweat (do you think this is how Duane Hagadone paints his house?), you can use this Wild Card to start threads of your own. Also, remember, you can forward Ken links, questions, comments, photos, etc., for him to post here for you ...
