Will authorized hosting put MySQL on a par with Oracle and DB2?

Although real comparability to Oracle and IBM databases could still be some time away, MySQL's new authorized hosting program might help broaden out the niche for the open source database a lot more quickly.

MySQL AB started developing a new program for hosting partners in early 2007, about a year before Sun announced its $1 billion bid to acquire the open source database vendor, said Rich Nigro, MySQL's service provider business manager. Unveiled earlier this week, the new MySQL Authorized Hosting Partner Program gives managed hosting companies using the top-of-the-line Enterprise edition of the MySQL database an option for 24/7 database support directly from MySQL.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, has opened a 13th century church in Wales which was dismantled and rebuilt stone-by-stone over 20 years 50 miles away at the National History Museum, St Fagansa, in Cardiff.

St Teilo's Church from Pontarddulais near Swansea has been restored to recreate its appearance in 1520. Copies of a rare series of 16th century paintings, which were uncovered as it was being dismantled, adorn the walls.

Dr Williams is from Wales, and he served as Bishop of Monmouth and as Archbishop of the Church in Wales, a disestablished art of the worldwide Anglican Communion, before becoming Archbishop of Canterbury.

He was accompanied at the ceremony by First Minister for Wales Mr Rhodri Morgan and other officials

Morgan believes that his great-grandparents married at the church, which was used regularly until 1850 and then occasionally during the summer until 1985, reports the BBC.

Co-terminal Illness:Silent on frosh expansion

President John Hennessy's column in Stanford Magazine last fall advocating an increase in undergraduate students seemed poised to start a healthy debate within the University. Since then, however, there's been no new information or discussion about the proposal from either the administration or The Daily.

Toy retailer entertains web upgrade

Independent toy retailer The Entertainer has completed a website refresh and contracted ecommerce specialist Escalate Retail to provide a software suite for the back-end.

The implementation cost just over 400,000, including overall hosting, development and license costs, in the first year but since the system went live in October 2007, one of the retailer's sites, thetoyshop.com, has increased sales by 147 per cent, according to The Entertainer's online marketing and ecommerce manager Richard Bewley.

The system replaces a bespoke implementation made before thetoyshop.com and The Entertainer's other brand Gadgetshop were acquired, which was deemed too inflexible to be able to cope with the peaks and troughs of traffic.

Some Thoughts on Gay Marriage

See http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/pwh/bosrev-wilken.h... for a great summary.

Jesus still defines sin as lack of love (Matthew 22:36-40). Those concerned about the sanctity of marriage should insist on outlawing adultery, divorce and abortion. All are sinful because each has an unloved victim. Marriage must be for love, not pregnancy.

What is unloving about a couple in a homosexual love relationships? Neither is victim, neither is unloved. Where is the hurt? Who is the victim being sinned against?

The Gospel writers and prophets do not mention homosexuality because it is not a sin. The King James Version comes closest to a correct translation of two condemning nouns used in Leviticus 18:22 — "sexual immorality". That is not necessarily homosexuality. ("Homosexual" was coined about 1865, so any translation using a form of that word is a lie that needs to be emended.

The kinder, gentler energy superpower

In the face of US demand for Canadian oil, the greatest challenge we face is maintaining our sovereignty and democracy. Already that demand has dictated for us Canadian policy on greenhouse gas emissions and the SPP (which is principally about securing energy security and prosperity for the US). The Canadian electorate's opinion is simply bypassed and the important long-term decisions on the future of our country are made behind closed doors by unelected elites.

For example, it was a Jan. 2006 meeting in Houston, Texas, kept secret from the Canadian public for over a year before Radio Canada got a hold of the minutes, that called for a "fivefold expansion" in oilsands production in a relatively "short time span" and encouraged decision-makers "to streamline the regulatory approval process" with a "one-stop-shop" for project proposals to facilitate that expansion.

Jeff Thelen's Blog

I live in a rural area and have a satalite dish as well as an antenna for local channels. (The dish is not used for local channels) When there is heavey cloud cover or heavey rain or snow the signal from the satalite is lost. I rely on my local stations for weather warnings, will the signal be lost with the new system when the weather gets bad?I actually don't know. You might want to drop Mikel Lauber a line about this. He's covered the issue extensively. His e-mail is mlauber@wsaw.com.JWith HDTV, what happens with are antennas???Again, a question for Mikel.JYour exclusive interview with Obama was a paid political ploy by the Obama campaign. His campaign pays for the satellite time, and its only just as a responsible journalist if you give "equal time" to both sides. I do not fault Mr. Lauber for doing the interview, but the station is misrepresenting just how "exclusive" it is.I'd agree with you if not for a couple of things.
