First Alterman, Then Obama!:

As a state patrolman pushes the governor's Ford hybrid sport utility vehicle toward 90 mph, coaxing it to an unnatural whine, Richardson punches buttons on one of his three cellphones.

He calls an aide and discusses potential fundraising events in April and May with Bill Clinton and Al Gore. Then he dials U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., leaving a message on the Senate minority leader's cellphone about an immigration-reform bill being debated that day: "I don't like this Hagel-Martinez initiative. It's sort of half a loaf. Let's hold fast." [E.A.]

If you want the whole loaf, it looks like Richardson is your guy. ... 7:07 P.M.

Econopundit posits the intriguing exception to the "Fifty-Fifty Forever" Theory:

Modern elections are largely governed by the principle of minimum differentiation which (according to the mean voter theorem) will generally produce a 50-50 split in most polls and elections.

A trip through an AIDS-ravaged African village, in Lodi

The gymnasium at Lodi's First Baptist Church has been transformed into four African villages where families are stricken with AIDS.The exhibit, organized by the Christian humanitarian organization World Vision, brings people into an African village and tells the story of a child through his or her own words."It was very moving," Kiley Bliss, of Lodi, said after walking through the exhibit on Thursday's opening day. "It gets you out of your own little world."The exhibit, called "Step into Africa," continues through Monday. The community is invited. The gym consists of about 3,000 square feet of wooden walls and straw roofs depicting the environment of a remote African village, including a poverty-stricken family's house. The consistent message in the exhibit is that many African families not only live in poverty, but many of them get AIDS through unprotected sex, rape or by other means. In the small southern African country of Lesotho, for example, 56,000 children have lost both their parents to AIDS, according to World Vision."It was pretty intense," said John Alvarez, of Woodbridge, a volunteer from First Baptist.

Vice Chairman Hood Underscores the Need for Effective Enterprise Risk ...

February 4, 2008, Alexandria, Va. – National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) Vice Chairman Rodney E. Hood addressed the National Association of Federal Credit Unions’ (NAFCU) Mid-Sized CEO Roundtable in Williamsburg, Va. The Vice Chairman used this forum to discuss the current financial state of the industry as the Agency prepares to release the industry’s 2007 year-end data.

Vice Chairman Hood provided detailed slides, specific to the group, comparing them to national averages for all federally insured credit unions, and he discussed the trends and points of concern that the Agency is tracking.

Hood described how the best practices of risk management can be used to mitigate the effects of a downturn in the economy. He presented the roundtable with seven areas of risk and their associated issues, based on the present state of our economy.

"Now more than ever, you as credit union leaders, along with your boards, must focus on doing due diligence.

Witnesses Describe Shooting Scene

I have been reading alot of the posts and I am seeing alot of name calling and down right ugliness. This is not supposed to be how we act in hard times. We need to leave the investigating up to officials, and comfort eachother. We need to all remember that his friends didn't shoot anyone or do any harm, so the hurtful things that some of you are saying about them are very unnessesary. Hold on tight to the ones you love, and try not to let this murderer keep you from living your life. Love you all.

HD DVD May Finally Be Dead... Only Three Years Too Late

Then there was MiniDisc, the DVD Recorder, XM Radio. So it's great to see Sony making it's way back at the helm again. I read something about Apple possibly buying Sony. My advice: Go for it.

My only ask is that you bring Carl Yankowski back on board to oversee the Operations Side of the house. Assuming he wants it, that is.

All I'll say is that I can still barely stream YouTube videos on my crappy dsl connection, and when I do I have to stop whatever else I'm doing online until it finishes downloading. While I agree that Internet video is in the future, both the delivery capacity and, more importantly, the mindsets of people who want to own something physical have to change before the optical disc format has to worry.

Updated: When Good Interviews Go Bad

We love the band Sigur Ros.

Their music is beautiful and moving, so much so that it doesn't matter that they're singing in a totally made-up language. Sigur Ros is four lads from Iceland, and recently, they were in New York to screen a new concert film Heima at the New Yorker Festival. Their P.R. folks called and asked if we wanted them on the show, to which we quickly replied, "hells yeah".

Anyway, last Friday the band showed up promptly at 11am (EDT) and commenced to give what is possibly the worst interview in the history of electronic media.

Seriously.

It was that bad.

We're not sure if they were tired, or if it was a language thing, or what... but wow. (UPDATE: Music journalist Jancee Dunn sorts through the interview's wreckage.)

Whereas most shows would just bury an interview like that, we've decided to actually show it to you.

UIL realignment results in a tough 5A and a 3A baseball powerhouse

Calallen, Alice, Flour Bluff, Tuloso-Midway and Kingsville will put some miles on their buses as they travel between 100-150 miles to test their collective mettle against three Laredo teams that have been added into their district fray.

And in District 31-3A, Sinton, Falfurrias and Robstown won't have to venture four rounds deep into the baseball playoffs to find competition -- it will be right there on the district schedule.

Those are only some of the scenarios set into motion with Friday morning's announcement by the University Interscholastic League of its biennial realignment, a process guaranteed to produce interesting matchups.

The UIL adjusts its districts, regions and classes for about 1,200 schools every two years based on enrollment figures collected from the Texas Education Agency.

DRAKE BAY, Costa Rica, Dec. 14, 2005 -- Officials closed Costa Rica's Corcovado National Park, a prime tourist attraction, because many kinds of animals are dying in alarming numbers there amid one of the most sensitive ecosystems in the world.

The dead include monkeys, toucans and sloths. The last time monkeys started dying on such a massive scale in the park was in the 1950s, said Edwardo Carrillo, the head researcher in the investigative team that is looking into the deaths. The culprit then was yellow fever, he said. However, yellow fever does not affect birds.

Carillo said that perhaps as many as half the monkey population at the park (www.costaricamap.com/ing/biopcorcovado.html) has died.

Anni Resigns To Fight Munavvar For Candidacy

However he won acclaim for a 2005 public apology to all those prosecuted during his time as attorney general on the basis of confessions obtained at the Dhoonidhoo detention centre. Meanwhile Anni was repeatedly jailed during the 1990s for dissident activities, allegedly suffering torture during this time. But he has faced criticism for reneging on a past pledge, made on his return from exile in 2005, not to seek the presidency. Charges An article in Wednesdays Sangu Daily argued Anni is ineligible to stand for the presidency because he has been found guilty of theft. He was convicted in 2001 of stealing papers from outside the former residence of ex-president Nasir, a charge widely believed to have been politically motivated. The resulting banishment sentence resulted in the removal of Annis seat as an MP.
