Coffee with Bohart co-owner Jean MacInnes
Bohart Ranch Cross Country Ski Center co-owner Jean MacInnes can't believe where the time has gone as she prepares for the 20th anniversary party this weekend. She inherited the business with her son and partner Chris Myers and have developed an operation with an international reputation for its scenic touring and racing trails. Aside from the birthday party, Bohart will host the NCAA Championship Nordic events this March for the sixth time. A busy year, no doubt, for someone who works 7 days a week during the season But Jean still tries to ski every day and see her 20-month-old great-granddaughter once in awhile. On the Bohart marketWe always say we have national and international reputation and a lot of people on Main Street don't know that we exist. Basically our market is Bozeman and Gallatin Valley.
Start-up Blist readies easy-to-use online relational database
Blist was unveiled Jan. 28 at Network World's DEMO 08, a showcase for new technology products and companies. (A video of Blist's presentation is available on Demo.com).The company is betting that lots of folks, from small business owners tracking sales, to fantasy football players and recipe hoarders, are ready, willing and able to give up using Microsoft Excel for data management and turn to database technology delivered as an online service. Blist uses the established open source PostgreSQL database engine for numbers and similar data that are the traditional domain for a RDBMS, coupled with a highly scalable distributed file system for documents and other stuff that won't "fit" into the RDBMS. The Blist database stores a bunch of metadata about these external files so they can be found and manipulated quickly.
New guidelines for schools warn of online dangers
William Fralin, R-Roanoke, sponsored the measure. The department prepared a 43-page manual that contains recommendations and cautions for school administrators, teachers and parents, as well as resources for information about online safety and potential threats to children. "We're really happy to have this in place," said Lan Neugent, the state assistant superintendent for technology. "We think that it's a great step forward." The report, which was published last month, contains several pages of Web-based links to sources covering topics such as filtering, instant messaging and identity theft. The cover has an ominous image of adult-size hands reaching through a computer screen toward a frightened-looking child behind a keyboard. Fralin said the guidelines will help parents and teachers better safeguard children, who often possess more sophisticated knowledge about computers and the Internet than adults.
Rampage look to rebound with a new coach and more playmakers
This franchise dates all the way back to the AFL's first game in 1987. Over the years, this team has been the Washington Commandos, Detroit Drive, Massachusetts Marauders and now the Grand Rapids Rampage. They have struggled in the past several seasons after winning the AFL Championship in 2001, and they are trying to get back to being a playoff-caliber team. They have local ownership from Dan DeVos and they are very community-oriented, but they are in a small market, which always presents challenges. Coaches and front office Steve Thonn is the new coach and director of football operations. He comes to Grand Rapids with high expectations because of the success he had while running Georgia's offense the past three seasons. He is considered a great playcaller and a tremendous QB developer, but he will have his hands full with the Rampage.
Dust to dust? More ask for eco-friendly funerals
PORTLAND, Ore. - Cynthia Beal wants to be an Oregon cherry tree after she dies. She has everything to make it happen — a body, a burial site and a biodegradable coffin. “It is composting at its best," said Beal, owner of The Natural Burial Company, which will sell a variety of eco-friendly burial products when it opens in January, including the Ecopod, a kayak-shaped coffin made out of recycled newspapers. Biodegradable coffins are part of a larger trend toward “natural" burials, which require no formaldehyde embalming, cement vaults, chemical lawn treatments or laminated caskets. Advocates say such burials are less damaging to the environment. .
Top-Shelf Digs At Libraries
It's a wonderful time for book lovers. This winter Hartford and West Hartford are giving the public two late-for-the-holidays presents: fully revamped libraries. On the face of it, the urban and suburban projects are very different. The expanded central library in Hartford, seven years and $42 million in the making, is crowned by a sweeping glass exterior. In contrast, the Noah Webster Library on South Main Street in West Hartford hasn't shed its classic roots. Tall white columns at the entrance blend with the suburban town center. But both libraries have added new technology, more space for children and teenagers, thousands of square feet both for books and activities, and more windows and light. .
