Cisco, Dell and others have seen lumpy customer demand, but the folks that are producing those volatile sales patterns–CIOs–are moderately optimistic and expect solid technology spending in 2008, according to a survey by UBS.

In its survey, UBS noted that:

Our CIO survey–completed in February–points toward surprisingly solid IT spending growth in '08. While we remain cautious on IT spending, the survey suggests that the spending environment may not be as dire as many think, and supports the optimistic outlooks of HP, EMC, Sun & IBM.

Today's News:

Pressure has been mounting on all parties as the Dallas Cowboys' Nov. 29 matchup with the Green Bay Packers approaches. The game will only be shown on the NFL Network.

"I've had a lot more people contact me about NFL football the last two months instead of child protective services, windstorm insurance or worker's compensation, which are frankly more important issues," said Rep. Corbin Van Arsdale, R-Tomball. "I don't control what constituents call me about."

The NFL Network wants to be placed on digital basic cable with all customers paying about 60 to 70 cents a month for it. Time Warner wants to offer the network on a surcharged sports tier available to subscribers who pay extra for it.

The network has rejected Time Warner's offer to let the network charge a fee for the games that would be passed on to customers.

McLaren sets very high bar as hubby

Every February he goes to the FBR Open in Scottsdale and enjoys the crowd spectacle at the 16th hole.

Many years ago on an off-day in Oakland, Ken Griffey Jr. lined up limos to take players and coaches to Pebble Beach, and McLaren passed because he had yet to take up the game. He said he'd die to play there now.

There are perks to being a big league manager. McLaren was playing with a friend at Blackstone Country Club last week, and after they finished their round, the head guy pulled him aside and gave him a membership, waiving the $75,000 initiation fee. McLaren couldn't believe it.

"I've always wanted to be part of a country club," he said.

When he's not golfing or managing, McLaren is most apt to be at home reading the paper, messing around on the computer or watching ESPN.

Cis' blog roundup - Friday

Over the course of 2 1/2-plus years of running this blog, I should get some credit for understanding how to run this blog while making it fun. I've tried drafting rules from time to time. But most of those attempts have gone by the way side. The ones Blogmeister Ken posted earlier this week are about as dead-on and simple as it gets:

- No personal attacks or inflammatory posts.
- No copyright violations.
- No libel.
And, if it isn't obvious...
- No porn.

I'd probably put an asterisk behind "or inflammatory posts" because some of you guys are so poisoned toward others that you believe anything they post is "inflammatory." Also, some of you believe that any dissing of your favorite political party or ideology is a personal attack. When all else fails, I fall back on the bottom-line rule here: Dave's blog, Dave's rules.

USE a tripod or lean against a lamppost to steady the camera while shooting. A pocket-sized tripod costs less than $10. Zooming rarely works, although zooming out works better than zooming in. Fully charge the battery and carry a spare if possible.CARRY more tapes/cards/disks than you plan to shoot. Before editing, write down a plan for the video. Theme music helps.REMEMBER to make the video as short as possible. Better to leave the viewer wanting more. Occasionally browse through YouTube to remind yourself of how not to shoot video. .

The Circuit

Marble, inlaid gold and Swarovsky crystal were the design details of choice (bling!). After all, let’s not forget this is a palace. Fancy a spot of Falconry before high tea? Or a round of Dune Driving? How about some Sand Skiing? Or would you rather just admire a corral of camels as you sip iced cocktails on the sand under a fully furnished Arabian tent?

More Than Three Wishes Absolutely no expense was spared; the attitude of the festival seemed to be: "You Want It, You Got It." Be careful of what you wish for – as I learned during one luxurious twenty-person dinner on a verandah overlooking the beach. I casually mentioned my disappointment in having missed the screening of a particular film, and before the words were fully out of my mouth, Bassem Kudsi (pictured), Head of Communications for the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage, whipped out his cell phone and arranged a private screening for the next morning – which was going to seriously cut into my scheduled poolside schmoozing.

MINNETONKA, Minn. The ruins of the Minneapolis bridge collapse are all cleaned up now, but Garrett Ebling is still picking up the wreckage it made of his life."Every step I take I'm sore, so that's a reminder. Every time I look in the mirror and see my new nose, it's a reminder. My mouth gets sore every time I chew that's a reminder," said Ebling, a 32-year-old journalist who was among the worst injured when his Ford Focus plummeted 60 feet into the Mississippi River.
For most Minnesotans, what happened on Aug. 1 has receded from daily notice. Answers from a federal investigation into the cause are months away, and at the state Capitol the doomed bridge has become just another subject of partisan feuding. But for Ebling, and an estimated 15 or so others seriously injured in the catastrophe, the last few months have been just the beginning of a long struggle to regain their health.Ebling's "new sense of normal," as he calls it, means recovering from the numerous bones broken in his face and jaw, two broken feet, a compound fracture in his left arm, a severed colon and a collapsed lung."You try to find milestones," Ebling said.He has a few: The day he left the hospital, two months after the collapse; walking for the first time without a walker, right before Thanksgiving; and his first day back at work for a few hours, about four months after the collapse. Before Aug.

The advantage of booking travel online is that you can do everything in one place – from arranging flights, to insurance, car hire and hotel reservations. Making all your travel arrangements through one source will often result in a healthy discount. If an online travel retailer does not mention a discount for booking everything through them, ask for one – you'll be surprised what sort of purchasing power you can wield with this approach. The other big bonus with booking travel online is the freedom to endlessly tinker with your desired departure times, dates and preferred airlines until you find a package that not only meets your specific needs, but saves you plenty of cash. Travel agents don't always go that extra mile to hunt for the perfect solution to your needs at the lowest cost, but you certainly will.

Winds shifting in the debate over education

Listening to Jones testify on HB 881, I am suddenly aware that, indeed, the center of gravity on the education debate has shifted. No longer are we stuck on inputs and debate about how one government can best grow another, which the input set chooses to define as "local control."

"It is a unique opportunity," Jones says of her bill establishing a state commission to grant charters, along with a fairer funding model. "This enhances local control by letting the consumer decide. To narrowly define local control [as] government monoply control does a disservice to Georgia." And to children who either drop out or struggle through bad schools that show no promise of improving.
