Digg sale to Microsoft or Google imminent: report
The website has been working with investment bank Allen & Co. on a sale for several months, but a deal is now imminent, according to the influential technology blog TechCrunch. Citing an unnamed source close to the deal, TechCrunch said there are four companies looking at Digg's books: two of them are large news and media companies, while Google and Microsoft are the other two. Digg is prepared to accept less than the $300 million US that Allen & Co. was seeking last year, with Google likely to bid up to $225 million, the report said. Microsoft would likely offer less than Google because part of Digg's revenue comes from an advertising deal the site signed with the software company last year. The two companies are expected to engage in a bidding war over the website, which ranks news stories according to how many votes they receive from visitors.
U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings Testifies Before House ...
Today, U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings testified before the House Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education and related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee to discuss the Department of Educations fiscal year 2009 budget request. Following is her prepared opening statement: Mr. Chairman and members of the committee, thank you for welcoming me here today. All of us agree that in todays competitive world, developing human capital is a top priority. We also know that we have limited resources to invest and that our primary role at the federal level has always been to serve our neediest students, such as those from low income families, those with disabilities, and those learning English as a second language. Accordingly, we must ensure that taxpayer dollars are allocated in the most effective and efficient ways.

Petitions against gender-bender bill spawn harassment, possible ...
A citizens group in Maryland's most populous county is considering legal action against two transgender activists accused of harassing and intimidating residents taking part in a petition drive to overturn a new law that bars discrimination against so-called "gender identity and expression." The group Citizens for Responsible Government (CRG) says it has collected far more than the 25,000 signatures of registered voters needed by March 9 to put up for referendum a law in Montgomery County that effectively declares transgender people and transvestites a protected class. CRG and other conservative groups warn the law would allow men confused about their gender to use public locker rooms and restrooms designated for females. CRG spokeswoman Michelle Turner says two transgender activists approached a number of petition gatherers and signers last week and began harassing them at Montgomery County grocery stores, "telling them that they had to leave the area, that the signatures were illegal, and just making folks very uncomfortable with the environment and what was going on." According to Turner, one of those individuals is a senior staff member with Councilwoman Duchy Trachtenberg, who is the chief sponsor of the bill.

Olympics boost for Brands
The Kent race circuit will be named in a guide to be distributed to teams during the Beijing games this summer, giving athletes the option to train in the south east ahead of the 2012 competition. It follows detailed assessments by the county council and efforts by the authority to make sure each site meets the strict international standard criteria. Brands Hatch chief executive Jonathan Palmer is looking forward to hearing which nation or nations the circuit will host: He said: "This is a big deal for Brands Hatch. Our facilities are world-class and we are used to looking after teams from all over the globe. "We would be proud to be a part of this historic event for the country and we hope to experience the flavour of the Olympics in the weeks leading up to the London Games.
CBC apologizes for leaving francophone artists out of TV show
Popular Quebec singer Claude Dubois accused the CBC of "racism" after it chopped several Quebec artists from the televised version of Monday's Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame gala in Toronto. Dubois said the public broadcaster had insulted Quebecers. CBC executive vice-president Richard Stursberg sent a letter Friday to all artists whose performances were not included in the TV show. "It was our view that the broadcast, on CBC's English language network and directed at an anglophone audience, should focus on music and musicians most familiar to that audience," Stursberg wrote. "Upon reflection and based upon the negative reaction to the television broadcast, we acknowledge that we could have done a better job of reflecting the full diversity of the participants." In the letter, Stursberg says the CBC did not intend to offend "any particular artists by excluding them." The CBC said Thursday the French performances were among cuts needed to fit the three-hour gala into a 44-minute time slot.
Castro steps down as leader
I saw three consecutive stories on Fidel and Cuba on our left-leaning, biased mothercorp. Not one mentioned that Cuba is a one party dictatorship, that Castro was a dictator held in power by his brother's control of the army, that in the early days of the "revolution" they shot, imprisoned or exiled their opponents. Now they only imprison them - including a 75 year old grandfather calling for democracy. Cuba today has as little political rights and freedoms as Battista's right wing Cuba did. Fidel is no Robin Hood, they are wealthy kleptocrats with huge bank accounts in Spain and Switzerland. No one can dare criticize the Cuban state without fear of prison, loss of housing or ration cards. Canadians who vacation there blithely, not realizing that their resort lines the pockets of and props up a dictatorial regime are complicit in the Cuban people being delayed freedom.

Never needs changing. Like a fluorescent bulb! ... 5:48 P.M. Dissing the Disgruntled! Grazer-Gate Update: A summary of the L.A.Times' second-time-farce scandal is here. The most recent at-bats ... Resigned editorial page editor Andres Martinez says the paper's newly-arrived editor and publisher caved to a disgruntled newsroom that is annoyed at [the paper's owners in] Chicago, annoyed at them and annoyed at the autonomy of the opinion pages. The newsroom unrest, Martinez says, is partly "ideological" (the news pages presumably being more conventionally liberal than his editorial page), partly "a matter of bureaucratic culture," and some of it a personnel matter (there are some embittered former editorial board members that Kinsley and Carroll sent off to the newsroom).
