Menaker to host new online series

Daniel Menaker, a longtime Gotham lit figure who decamped from Random House as editor-in-chief last spring, is hosting a new online interview series.

Touted as a Web first, "Titlepage" will feature roundtable interviews with a group of writers, taking its inspiration from "The Charlie Rose Show," IFC's "Dinner for Five" and the French staple "Apostrophes."

The six-episode first season begins March 3 on www.titlepage.tv.

"Titlepage" is the "perfect way to share my enthusiasm for books and their authors -- in an instantly and permanently accessible format -- with as many readers as possible," said Menaker. "I've always sought out literary conversations, and I think we can make them surprising and entertaining for anyone who might want to stop by."

Though it will have the production values of a TV show, "Titlepage" will seek to exploit its Web trappings by offering forums for discussion and links to online booksellers.

GCC has global investment and development magnet promise, says ULI ...

Speaking ahead of this week's ULI conference in Abu Dhabi, Todd Mansfield, the Institute's Chairman, says the world-wide development industry has now woken up to the opportunities the Gulf Co-operation Countries and United Arab Emirates now hold out. 'The rest of the world is absolutely aware of the real estate investment and development potential of the region, which holds enormous promise as a global magnet for investment and development,' said Mansfield. But the ULI Chairman emphasized that the region must embrace sustainable development if it is going to compete on the world stage. 'While every market is different, cities and regions around the globe are sharing growing concerns over sustainability,' said Mansfield. 'These sustainability issues include concerns over managing population growth, responding to demographic changes, building enough affordable housing, improving transportation and other infrastructure, and protecting the environment.

Nutt: Stick a fork in him

I e-mailed a very famous sports columnists in the middle of the Heath/Altman thing. He told me that Arkansas was renowned for its arrogance, got played by Gillispie when all the college basketball world knew what was happening, and had fans who didn't realize the job wasn't half what the people inside the state thought it was.)

But who knows? That was basketball . . . Maybe it'll be Spurrier.

GO HOGS!!

General plan report: Look forward, not back

The Citizens Advisory Commission consistently voted to recommend preserving the concept of city-centered growth and to protect agriculture from development encroachment.

If a majority of the committee membership were pro-development (which I would dispute), that bias is not reflected in the completed general plan update as it was recommended to the Solano County Planning Commission.

Fortunately, anyone interested in the proposed Solano County general plan update can form their own opinion regarding its potential effect on rural development. To access the general plan go online to www.solanogeneralplan.net.

By the way, I should disclose that I was a member of both the original committee and the reformulated committee.

Rey: States that back roadless forests should pay for fire costs

Rey, the undersecretary for natural resources and the environment in charge of the U.S. Forest Service, said the Bush administration has encouraged states and local governments to offer input in the management of federal lands.

But he told a Wildland Urban Interface conference that one of the unintended consequences is that state-imposed moratoriums on development in roadless areas boost the cost of fighting fires because of reduced access to housing subdivisions that sprout up on the edge of those forests.

"In a number of cases, most recently in the state of California, the states have weighed in with a profound desire not to see any roadless area incurred as a broad matter of environmental priorities. And I frankly don't have any quarrel with that as a statement of environmental policy," Rey said.

Travel-Spring break: Beaches, parties, slopes, and more

NEW YORK (AP) — Spring break can mean partying in Cancun or volunteering in New Orleans. But it can also mean late-season skiing or even birdwatching. Here are some spring break ideas.

BOOKING: You get the best value and choice booking three to four months ahead. But you can still plan plenty of last-minute trips. Flying on weekdays and staying four rather than seven days increases your last-minute options for flights and lodging, according to Amanda Webb of STA Travel.

Most college spring breaks fall between March 8 and 22. Not surprisingly, that's when airfare peaks, according to Farecast.com, a travel search site. The Web site's research found fares average $294 to Las Vegas, $270 to Orlando, $314 to Miami, and $350-$500 for Mexico and the Caribbean. Farecast.com says if you're not bound to the college calendar, you'll save money vacationing at the end of February or in April.

Screencasting Recorder: Upload, Share, Publish, Embed - FreeScreencast ...

This is too good to be true! FreeScreencast is a new free web-based service that allows you to record anything taking place on your screen in a simple way. Not only. FreeScreencast takes care of uploading your recorded clip and provides you immediately with an embed code to post the screencast on your site. This is the first easy, and inexpensive screencasting tool that truly empowers online publishers to create and publish high-quality screencasts on their blog sites with the minimum effort.

The only limitations of this new web-based service are the fact that for now the screen recording tool works only on PC Windows machines, the need to download a few components, and a few rough corners in the UI and management features available for now. But it is reasonable to expect that within a short time these issues will be addressed providing to this service the true popularity and attention it deserves.
